ORCHESTRA

Beginning Orchestra: (6th - 7th Grade)
Instruction is offered for violin, viola, cello, and bass. The violin is the smallest instrument and has the highest pitch. The viola is very similar to the violin, but it sounds a little bit lower. The cello plays in the middle to low range and is bigger than the violin and the viola. The bass is the largest instrument and sounds the lowest. The beginning orchestra participates in concerts throughout the year, which are held in the evening time. The students will learn how to hold the instruments, properly pluck the strings, learn different notes and rhythms, and finally learn how to use the bow. String instruments can be rented or purchased through a music store, and students will use s music book.

Intermediate Orchestra: (6th - 8th Grade)
Instruction is offered for violin, viola, cello, and bass. Class participants will review skills and concepts learned in Beginning Orchestra and develop a more advanced skill set of finger patterns, rhythm patterns, and bowing patterns. Basic ensemble skills are taught as well. Performances are scheduled outside of the school day and participation in evening performances is mandatory. All class members must purchase a number of required items (see instructor for specifics) that include instruments, accessories, music, and clothing (financial assistance available for students with documented financial need). Bassist's will have school instruments available to them for rent. Instructor approval is required for class membership.

Advanced Orchestra: (6th - 8th Grade)
Instruction is offered for violin, viola, cello, and bass. Membership is granted through competitive auditions to be held during May each year to those students who meet acceptable music performance, academic and behavioral standards. All decisions of the instructor regarding membership in the Advanced Orchestra are final. Advanced Orchestra members must agree to maintain academic eligibility for all grading periods (including progress reports) and not be subject to pull-out for remedial tutoring in TAKS subjects. Members will have a more extensive required afternoon and evening rehearsal and performance schedule including (but not limited to) sectionals, assemblies, UIL events, and concerts. Music assigned for technique development and performance must be learned quickly and at a high level of performance. All class members must purchase a number of required items (see instructor for specifics) that include instruments, accessories, music, and clothing (financial assistance available for students with documented financial need). Bassist's will have school instruments available to them for rent.
