West Briar Clubs

Non-Competitive

 

The Anime Club is a subject of Japanese cartoons in which expands upon several items of Japanese culture, history, and recreational references.  Club activities include:

·         Learning Japanese

·         Watching Anime

·         Drawing

·         Cosplay – dressing as your favorite character from an anime or video game

Briar Buddies is a group of students dedicated to creating one-to-one friendships with the students in West Briar’s special needs classes. Briar Buddies provides a unique opportunity for students to build friendships that foster better self-esteem for all the students involved.

Break Monsters Club promotes the study of break dance, b-boy, and freestyle techniques, as well as memory skills, strength, and endurance.

Meeting: 6th, 7th, and 8th graders meet every Wednesday, 4:00-5:00.

Chess and Scrabble Club builds language and strategy skills in a quiet and relaxed atmosphere.  The Club welcomes all students, regardless of experience, who are interested in learning the games and playing with peers.

Christians on Campus helps students gain a deeper understanding of Christ through mutual prayer and fellowship.

Drama Club instructs students on the process of being in a play through acting, advertising, technical aspects, costuming, building and developing scenery and assisting at directing.  Past accomplishments of the group include winning the UIL One Act Play competition, Best Actor, Actress and Technical Team for a socially conscience play on terminal illness.  Additionally, the group was honored to be invited to participate in acting workshops at the Alley Theatre.  Current drama students only.

Girl Scouts This school based troop follows the girl scout mission to build girls of courage, confidence and character to make the world a better place.

Knitting Club   Learn the basics of knitting.  Projects will include a potholder and a scarf.

National Junior Honor Society is one of the nation's top organizations to recognize outstanding middle school students.  Five main purposes outlined in the NJHS constitution: “To create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, to develop worthy school and community citizenship, and to develop character in the students of secondary schools.”  Members must maintain an 89 or above overall average in addition to participating in community volunteer opportunities.  Many NJHS students join the National Honor Society in high school, thus qualifying them for college scholarships.

Not At Home Work Club Provides students an opportunity to finish their homework at school under the supervision and with the assistance of a certified teacher.

Student Government is a service organization run by the student members.  Although the club is responsible for many fun events, the primary goal is to develop student leadership in schools and provide service to the school and community.   Student government annually collects canned food and clothing for local centers to donate to families in need in addition to helping classroom libraries at West Briar by managing a book drive.

Yearbook The yearbook team is chosen in May through an application process.  This team works yearlong on choosing a new theme, hone skills as photographers and journalists to produce a book yet better than its predecessor.

Yoga Stretching Provides students with an opportunity to start the day to gain greater balance and improve their physical health.

West Briar Academic Teams

Math Counts(Number Sense) is a national organization dedicated to the inspiration of excellence, confidence and curiosity in middle school students through fun and challenging math programs.  With the leadership of the National Society of Professional Engineers, Math Counts is providing today’s students with the foundation for success in science, technology, engineering and mathematics careers.

Meetings:  This is a 6th-8th grade class that meets in room F207, first period, and attends competitions . 6th -8th grade students not enrolled in the class, meet Friday mornings at 7:30 in B207 in Mr. Inman’s classroom.

Name That Book is a highly competitive event sponsored by HISD’s Library Services Department each spring.  Students who participate read books from the NTB Middle School titles (35) and annotated summaries listed on HISD’s Library Services website.  Students interested in participating are expected to read at least 20 of those titles by December.  Early in the second semester, six students and an alternate are chosen to represent West Briar at the district contest in March.  Our West Briar team has always excelled at the district-wide competitions, consistently winning at the Preliminary Rounds and moving on to Finals.

Meetings:  6th, 7th and 8th grade students meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays during advisory period in the library beginning in October.

Odyssey of the Mind is an international educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities.  Team members apply their creativity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics via a short stage production.  They then bring their solutions to competition on the local, state and World level.  Parents are needed to coach the teams.

Meetings:  6th, 7th and 8th graders are invited to join.  Parents should contact Dr. Maneen with team member’s names.

Science Olympiad is a science based competitive team.  It is dedicated to improving the quality of science education and increasing student interest in science.  The goals are achieved by participating in Science Olympiad tournaments and non-competitive events, incorporating the activities into classroom curriculum, and teacher training.  In our first year we placed in three events at the regional competition.

Scholastic Writing is a competitive writing group where students create original works such as short stories, personal essays, memoirs or poetry.  This is a UIL competitive team.
